Joint models for cause-of-death mortality in multiple populations

Nhan Huynh, a key member of our actuarial science team, has been awarded the 2024 Peter Clark Prize from the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries (UK) for the most outstanding paper published this year in the actuarial literature.

Nhan co-authored the winning paper with her PhD advisor, Prof. Michael Ludkovski: Joint models for cause-of-death mortality in multiple populations, published in the Annals of Actuarial Science. Their research applies cutting-edge spatial machine learning methods to analyze and forecast cause-of-death mortality rates across countries and populations, capturing critical dependencies between causes and demographic groups. The result is a significant advance in the way actuaries can model complex mortality trends, essential work for any field where long-term risk prediction matters.
